The CODIT Priciple –Tree Biology and Care – Theory and Practice

A one-day professional workshop with Prof. Dirk Dujesiefken, one of the key figures behind the development of the CODIT (Compartmentalization of Damage in Trees) principle.
The workshop focuses on understanding tree responses to injury—from the initial physiological reaction to long-term consequences for tree stability and vitality. Emphasis is placed on the practical impacts of CODIT on decision-making in arboricultural practice.

You will learn what truly happens inside a tree after injury, why it is not simply about "rot," and how various interventions in the crown, trunk, and roots affect tree stability over years and decades. The morning session covers theory, followed by afternoon practical demonstrations on fresh wood from various tree species.

The workshop is designed for arborists, green space managers, and professionals who aim to perform interventions in a way that allows the tree to compartmentalize damage—not just survive.

  • Language: The entire program will be interpreted into Czech.
  • Amenities: Refreshment and lunch are included in the registration fee.

Workshop program:

  • Morning (9:00 AM – 12:30 PM): Theoretical introduction to the CODIT principle, explanation of the individual phases of tree response to damage, and the links between injury, functional failure, and decay.

  • Lunch (Included)

  • Afternoon (1:30 PM – 5:00 PM): Practical demonstrations on fresh wood—pruning cuts, cracks, bark and root injuries. Comparison of reactions across different tree species.
