Certification exam: VETcert – Consulting Level

The Veteran Tree Specialist certification is a qualification managed by the European Arboricultural Council (EAC). In the Czech Republic, the exam is organized by the ČSOP Arboricultural Academy (VETcert Certification Center).

The objective of the exam is to verify the candidate's knowledge and skills in relation to the VETcert standards (www.vetcert.eu).

Exam:

Zkouška bude probíhat v českém jazyce. 

  • Language: The exam will be conducted in Czech or in English.

  • Exam Structure: The certification is divided into three sections: a written exam, an outdoor practical demonstration, and the preparation of a management plan (report).

 

Written ExamContains approximately 45 questions requiring short written answers.

Outdoor Practical Demonstration -Consists of individual exercises and a section covering general questions:

  • Exercise 1: Gathering sufficient data to prepare a management plan for two veteran trees.

  • Exercise 2: Assessing the historical development of the tree and the surrounding landscape.

  • Exercise 3: Tree risk assessment (public safety/operational safety).

Management Plan (Report) – Candidates must produce two reports based on the trees examined during the practical demonstration. Reports must follow a prescribed structure:

  • Basic tree information

  • Tree vitality

  • Health status, structural stability of the tree and its parts

  • Associated organisms (biological potential), historical, cultural, and social value

  • Identification of threats

  • Proposed management measures/interventions

  • Summary and justification (defense) of the chosen measures

Equipment Requirements

  • Allowed: Candidates may use a camera during outdoor exercises for photo documentation. No other electronic aids are permitted.

  • Mandatory: Candidates must bring all necessary equipment to collect data on the assessed trees.

  • Laptops: Candidates must bring their own computer to write the management plan.

Entry Requirements:

To apply, you must choose one of the following two routes and meet the specified prerequisites:

Route 1:

  • Qualification: Holder of the EAC European Tree Technician (ETT) certificate or an equivalent national qualification (e.g., ČCA – Consultant). Proof: Certificate number and copy.

  • Experience: At least 5 years of relevant work experience, of which 3 years must be in arboricultural consultancy. Proof: Self-declaration and reference list.

Route 2:

  • Qualification: Ability to demonstrate knowledge and experience equivalent to the ETT or ČCA – Consultant level.

  • Experience: At least 10 years of relevant work experience, of which 5 years must be in arboricultural consultancy. Proof: Self-declaration and reference list.

Certification exam VETcert – Practising Level

Objective: The objective of the examination is to verify the candidate's knowledge and skills in relation to VETcert standards.

The Veteran Tree Specialist certification is a qualification managed by the European Arboricultural Council (EAC). In the Czech Republic, the exam is organized by the CSOP Arboricultural Academy (VETcert certification center).

The examination will be conducted in Czech or in English.

Examination Structure:

What is tested during the certification? The certification is divided into two sections: a written exam and an outdoor demonstration.

  • Written Exam: Consists of two parts:

    • Part A: Closed-ended test questions (multiple choice).

    • Part B: Open-ended questions requiring detailed written answers.

  • Outdoor Demonstration: Consists of individual exercises where the candidate must evaluate a veteran tree and its surroundings before work begins and describe the execution of the work in detail.

General context: The exam also includes general questions and exercises covering a broader context.

Important Note: The exam does not include a practical climbing demonstration or actual pruning. Candidates must verbally describe the steps required to implement the proposed management plan in detail. A laser pointer will be used for clarification. Assessment will focus on the candidate's ability to explain the reasoning behind their chosen approach and their ability to justify individual decisions.

Prerequisites:

What do I need to apply for certification? To be admitted to the certification process, you must meet the following requirements:

  • European Tree Worker (ETW) Certificate: (ETW - Platform or ETW - Tree Climbing). Proof required: certification number and a copy of the certificate.

  • Valid chainsaw and work-at-height (or MEWP) permits: As required by the legislation of the country where the exam takes place. Proof required: copies of certificates.

  • At least five years of relevant professional experience: Proof required: a signed declaration and a list of references.

VETcert Certificate and ID Card (Consulting Level or Practising Level) issued by EAC
